How to use a speed bag?
- Set the speed bag. If you’re using a “free” style swing, place the speed bag at the center of your chest and tighten it up to make sure it’s not too high or low.
- Then, tighten both sides of the straps to get them at equal lengths (again, this makes sure that your arms will be equally weighted when hitting).
- Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and stagger your stance so that one foot is closely behind the other, out to the side.
- Bend both knees slightly and turn the leading foot outwards, keeping yours back foot close to the ground. This will allow you to pivot on this outer or front leg as you punch.
- Lean forward and keep your body relaxed, bending at the waist and not at the hips too much.
- Now bend hand down so it’s almost touching floor but don’t touch it! Hold up speed bag by punching it with your front arm until it’s around nose level then punch at speed bag as hard as you can like right in its face.
The speed bag must be hit at least once every second. When you first start to use the bag, aim for an easy pace of about two minutes per round. Start with ten rounds and work your way up to twenty or thirty for more advanced users.
